SK Maths EDGE FAQ

Why are more and more children running away from Maths? Why are so many kids opting for easier subjects as they progress through VCE? According to the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), in the 2018 PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) study, 41% of Australian 15-year-olds did not achieve the national proficiency standard in mathematics [Reference: ACER PISA 2018 National Report]. This is a significant concern. Moreover, a report by the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) highlights a declining participation rate in advanced mathematics courses in senior high school, with many students choosing less challenging subjects [Reference: AMSI Discipline Profile of the Mathematical Sciences]. Why? Often, it’s due to a weak foundation built in their early years.

I see this challenge daily, in the very students I teach. Right now, I’m working with Grade 7 students who struggle with two-digit multiplication and Grade 10 students who find adding or subtracting fractions to be an insurmountable challenge. And when we introduce negative numbers into algebra, it further complicates matters, creating a significant barrier for many students. When these fundamental math concepts become overwhelming, it’s not just about the numbers; it’s about the erosion of confidence and the loss of essential life skills. These gaps, if left unaddressed, can significantly impact their future academic and professional lives.

The truth is, Maths is powerful beyond academics. It equips our children with logical thinking, problem-solving, and critical decision-making skills—essential tools in any career path. Yet, many children develop a fear of Maths early on. I’ve observed this fear personally, and it’s heart-breaking. Did you know that taking Maths Methods and Specialist Maths in VCE significantly expands your child’s university course options? Many prestigious university programs in engineering, science, economics, and technology require these advanced Maths subjects. Ensuring your child has a strong foundation in Maths early on opens doors to these opportunities. My passion is to change this narrative—to give every child a strong, unshakable foundation in Maths. I believe kids should love Maths, not fear it.

The Power of Maths: Unlocking Your Child’s Future

Maths isn’t just about textbooks and tests; it’s a powerful tool that shapes how your child interacts with the world. Imagine your child confidently navigating real-world challenges: understanding budgets, analyzing data, or even designing a building. These aren’t just academic exercises; they’re life skills. Whether your child dreams of becoming a doctor, an artist, a business leader, or a programmer, Maths provides the essential foundation. It sharpens their mind, enabling them to think logically, solve problems creatively, and make informed decisions. For instance, understanding ratios can empower them to make smart financial choices, while mastering algebra opens doors to careers in cutting-edge fields like engineering and technology. But more than that, Maths builds confidence—the confidence to tackle any challenge life throws their way. At SK Maths Edge, we’re not just teaching Maths; we’re equipping your child with the skills to thrive in an increasingly complex world.

The Long Game: Building a Maths Foundation for Life

Let’s be honest: mastering Maths isn’t a quick fix. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Building a solid foundation takes time, consistent effort, and a strong partnership between us and you. Think of it like learning a musical instrument. You wouldn’t expect to play a symphony after a few lessons. Similarly, Maths requires consistent practice and patience. There will be challenges, moments of frustration, and times when your child might want to give up. But here’s the reality: every challenge overcome, every concept mastered, strengthens their foundation. It’s about building resilience and a growth mindset—skills that will serve them far beyond the classroom. We are committed to guiding your child every step of the way, providing the support and encouragement they need to persevere. Together, we can ensure they not only understand Maths but also develop a love for learning that will last a lifetime.

Your Child’s Maths Success: Our Shared Priority

As parents, we all worry about our children’s future. The reality is, without a solid Maths foundation, they may face unnecessary hurdles in their academic and professional lives. We understand this concern, and it’s why we’re so committed to your child’s success. At SK Maths Edge, we don’t just teach Maths; we build confidence. We provide high-quality, skill-based education tailored to your child’s individual needs. We work closely with you to monitor their progress, providing ongoing support and guidance every step of the way. We believe in a collaborative approach. Your child’s Maths journey is a partnership between us, you, and your child. We’re here to ensure every concept is understood, every challenge is overcome, and every success is celebrated. Together, we can turn Maths from a source of anxiety into a source of empowerment.

Your Role: Partnering for Maths Success

Your involvement is crucial. Let’s face it, we can’t do this alone. Here are practical ways you can make a real difference:

  • Create a Consistent Routine: Life gets busy, but even 30 minutes a day can transform your child’s understanding. Make it non-negotiable.
  • Eliminate Distractions: A quiet, distraction-free space is essential. No phones, no TV. Just focus.
  • Ask Questions: Show genuine interest in what they’re learning. Ask them to explain concepts to you.
  • Celebrate Small Wins: Every problem solved, every concept grasped, is a victory. Acknowledge and celebrate these moments.
  • Guide, Don’t Solve: Resist the urge to do the work for them. Guide them, encourage them, but let them figure it out.
Remember, your consistent involvement sends a powerful message: Maths matters. To make significant progress, it’s essential that your child practices Maths every day for at least 30 minutes at home. If the child has finished the homework in 2 days, they should repeat the homework. Maths is one of the best foods you can give your brain to make it logically and analytically strong. Parents should commit to supporting their children and ensuring that they are doing their homework in the notebook.

Your Support Makes a Difference

Your words have impact. When your child struggles, your encouragement can be the difference between giving up and pushing through. Celebrate every step, no matter how small. Your belief in their abilities fosters a growth mindset—the understanding that challenges are opportunities to learn and improve. This mindset is invaluable, not just in Maths, but in life.

Let’s Build a Maths Future Together

We’re in this together. By working as a team, we can equip your child with the Maths skills they need to succeed—in school, in university, and in their careers. We’ll keep you informed about their progress, and we welcome your feedback. Your input helps us tailor our approach to your child’s unique needs. Thank you for trusting us with your child’s education. Together, we can unlock their Maths potential.

The Foundation of Success: Daily Practice and Consistency

Consistency is the cornerstone of Maths mastery. Even small amounts of daily practice compound over time, leading to significant improvements. Daily practice not only strengthens fundamental skills but also:

  • Boosts Confidence: Regular practice leads to mastery, reducing anxiety and increasing confidence.
  • Enhances Problem-Solving: Consistent exposure to problems improves analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Improves Retention: Daily reinforcement helps solidify concepts in long-term memory.
  • Develops Discipline: Establishes a routine that fosters discipline and time management.

Think of it like building muscle memory: the more consistent the practice, the more ingrained the skills become. At SK Maths Edge, we are fully committed to providing your child with a strong foundation in mathematics—one that will not only help them excel academically but also equip them with valuable problem-solving skills for life. These skills will empower them to make decisions, think critically, and excel in any field they choose to pursue. As your child grows in confidence and capability, we may gradually increase their practice time to ensure they are mastering key concepts while keeping their learning balanced and enjoyable. This increase will depend on their individual needs and areas for improvement, with the goal of maintaining progress without feeling overwhelmed. We will regularly update you on your child’s progress, so you’re always in the loop. Your feedback is always welcome, as we work together to ensure your child’s success. Thank you for your continued support and trust in our approach to your child’s education. Together, we’ll guide them to success in Maths and in life.

At SK Maths Edge, we don’t just teach Maths; we identify and address the foundational gaps that could hold your child back. Without a solid understanding of core concepts, moving forward in Maths is like building a house on sand—what’s built on weak foundations will eventually crumble under pressure.

Many parents, along with their children, believe they’re strong in Maths until Grade 9, only to be blindsided by the difficulty of Grade 10 concepts. By then, students often have no choice but to opt for easier Maths, unable to keep up with more complex topics.

Maths isn’t just about acing exams—it’s about whether your child can apply their knowledge in the real world, solving everyday problems and making critical decisions in their personal and professional future. Whether it’s managing finances, analyzing data, or solving complex problems in future careers, a strong Maths foundation provides your child with the essential skills needed in both life and work.

That’s why it’s crucial to start early—ideally from Prep, but at least by Grade 2—to give your child the best foundation. Addressing gaps early on means that their skills will be rock-solid when more complex topics arise in the future.

We believe that with the right foundational skills, your child will be equipped to succeed confidently and independently, reducing the need for external support in the future and preparing them for long-term success.

But if you feel your child is struggling, don’t wait—every day without a strong foundation means they’re falling further behind. By investing in your child’s Maths education today, you ensure they have the skills and confidence to succeed not only in advanced Maths but also in real-world problem-solving and their future career pursuits.

At SK Maths EDGE, our primary focus is on developing what we call “Maths Muscle Memory” in our students – a deep, ingrained understanding of fundamental concepts achieved through consistent practice and repetition.

Have you ever wondered why some Maths graduates or university-educated individuals struggle to recall or teach basic maths effectively? Or why so many people freeze when faced with discounts, fractions, or percentages in everyday life, even after studying Maths until Grade 12 or university level?

It’s often because those foundational skills weren’t practiced enough to become automatic and readily applicable. At SK Maths EDGE, we address this directly by ensuring that these fundamental mathematical concepts are worked on diligently until they are truly ingrained. Just like building muscle memory in sports, repeated exposure and practice of basic maths skills are crucial for long-term retentionautomaticity, and the ability to confidently apply maths in real-world situations, leading to a stronger, more intuitive grasp of mathematics.

We understand that many students may not have had sufficient prior exposure to maths, resulting in weaker “Maths Muscle Memory.” This can lead to concepts being forgotten quickly and difficulties in tackling more advanced topics. Therefore, our approach prioritizes building this strong foundational understanding through focused repetition of key concepts and problem types.

We believe that there are no shortcuts to mastering the basics. Students need to practice the same types of questions multiple times for the concepts to truly set in. We will continue to work on these fundamentals until we are confident that they have become second nature. Only then will students be truly ready to progress to higher-level concepts with a secure understanding. Attempting to move ahead with weak fundamentals is often counterproductive and can lead to frustration.

Our method is designed to build this essential “Maths Muscle Memory,” which not only strengthens their understanding of mathematical concepts but also enhances their logical thinking and analytical abilities, empowering them to confidently navigate mathematical challenges in both academic and everyday contexts. We are committed to ensuring that every student at SK Maths EDGE develops a robust and lasting foundation in mathematics, setting them up for long-term success and confidence in the subject.

Absolutely. We understand your concern about the substantial gap between your child’s grade level and math skills. While it may seem daunting, we firmly believe that with dedicated effort and collaboration, we can bridge this gap. Here’s how:

  1. Dedicated Effort is Key: To cover 4-5 years of learning, both you and your child need to commit to consistent, daily math practice. We want to be transparent – this will require significant effort.
  2. Building a Strong Foundation: We’ll begin with a targeted learning plan, starting with Grade 3 concepts, to establish a solid base.
  3. Consistent Practice & Targeted Homework: We’ll provide focused homework and emphasize regular practice, tailored to your child’s current level.
  4. Personalized Tutoring Frequency: We’ll tailor the tutoring frequency (potentially 2-3 sessions per week) to your child’s pace and discuss options that align with your family’s circumstances. We understand the importance of balancing effective learning with financial considerations.
  5. Active Parental Partnership: Your involvement is crucial. We’ll work together to ensure your child completes homework and develops independent problem-solving skills.
  6. Focus on Growth, Not Just “Good Jobs”: We’ll prioritize constructive feedback, emphasizing improvement over superficial praise.
  7. Patience & Encouragement: We’ll foster a positive learning environment, emphasizing patience and encouragement.
  8. Regular Progress Tracking: We’ll closely monitor your child’s progress and adjust the learning plan as needed.
  9. Open Communication: We’ll maintain open lines of communication for any questions or concerns.

Our goal is to empower your child to confidently master mathematics and close this gap. Let’s collaborate to create a successful learning experience. Please schedule a consultation to discuss a personalized plan.

It’s wonderful to hear about your child’s enthusiasm and progress in mathematics. We understand that increasing tutoring frequency can significantly enhance their skills, as demonstrated by the positive outcomes of high-dosage tutoring programs in countries like the Netherlands, which showed a substantial reduction in math achievement gaps. <Source: ScienceDirect>

Currently, we offer individual sessions on Mondays. However, we are open to exploring additional sessions. To best accommodate your needs and potentially those of other interested students, let’s discuss your specific scheduling requirements after the upcoming Monday class. Please come prepared to share your preferred days and times so we can assess feasibility. If there is sufficient demand, we will gladly arrange more frequent tutoring options.

  • Individual Catch-Up Sessions (Charged): If individual catch-up sessions are required due to frequent absences, they will be charged at $200 per hour. This fee reflects the dedicated, one-on-one attention necessary to bring your child back to the class’s level.
  • Tutor Cancellations: In the rare event of a tutor cancellation, we will promptly notify you and reschedule the class. If the cancellation is due to an urgent circumstance, the class will not be charged.
  • Respect for Tutor Time: We value our tutors’ time and expect it to be respected.

We aim to be flexible while maintaining a fair system. Please contact us with any questions.
